About

With a unique blend of experience in a family design-build business, formal training in the fine arts, and a master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering, I bring a distinctive skill set to my work in structural engineering.

My mission is to deliver streamlined, elegant structural designs and solutions that optimize material usage in a cost-effective manner, ensuring your project’s success.

My unique skillset

My journey into the world of architecture and construction started in my family’s business, where I spent over a decade immersed in residential architecture. I honed my skills by restoring Victorian homes in the Nevada City Historical District working alongside my stepfather, Chris Nielsen, a renowned craftsman and builder. My stepfather taught me the art of using sustainable materials and environmentally sound practices to achieve beautiful results.

In addition to my hands-on experience, I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz, specializing in drawing, oil painting, and photography. I grasped the opportunity to study abroad in Cortona, Italy where I gained an understanding of and experienced the intersection of art and architecture. Finally, I earned a master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering with a focus on structural engineering, at the University of California, Davis.

My dual expertise in art and engineering allows me to offer a unique perspective to my clients. Few professionals possess proficiency in both domains, and I take pride in employing these skills to benefit my clients and their projects.

My commitment to sustainability

Environmental stewardship is at the core of my engineering philosophy. I am deeply committed to material optimization and sustainable design practices. My collaborative approach involves working closely with designers, fabricators, architects, and contractors to achieve the best possible outcomes for each project.

My engineering approach

Unlike many structural engineering firms that rely on “cut and paste” designs that can lead to over-designed and unnecessarily expensive solutions that are prone to errors, I create custom designs for every project. While some elements of design can be universally applied, embracing a tailored approach can eliminate complications during the building process and save on materials and construction. I meticulously optimize my designs to reduce construction and material costs, while meeting code and ensuring the structure’s safety and integrity. This typically saves my clients 15-20% in construction.

If you’re seeking a fresh perspective, and a commitment to excellence, I invite you to get in touch with me today.
